Unlocking the Secrets of the Innovation Fund with DIAMONDS4IF

The Innovation Fund, financed by EU Emissions Trading System revenues, is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the demonstration of innovative low-carbon technologies. It is a crucial tool in the EU’s strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, offering significant financial support to projects that can efficiently reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

However, understanding the eligibility criteria and navigating the application process can be challenging. That’s where DIAMONDS4IF comes in.

Experts from PNO have created a series of short video tutorials, now available on our dedicated YouTube Channel, “Innovation Fund DIAMONDS.” The goal of these tutorials is to provide practical and essential knowledge about the Innovation Fund (IF) and to establish a foundational understanding of the comprehensive information required throughout the application process.

 

Understanding Eligibility for the Innovation Fund

The video series, produced from July 2024 and released gradually until September 2024, covers various aspects of the Innovation Fund. In the first video, we describe the eligibility criteria for accessing the Innovation Fund grant scheme.

If it is true that IF is designed to support investments aimed at decarbonizing European industry, is also true that the Innovation Fund is not accessible to everyone.

Typically, companies participating in the EU ETS can apply for Innovation Fund grants.

These include following sectors:

  • Energy intensive industries, such as chemical companies, steel and cement producers;
  • Maritime and Aviation sectors
  • Net zero mobility and buildings
  • Construction and operation of innovative renewable energy and energy storage technologies
  • Carbon capture, geological storage and utilization
  • Manufacturing of innovative clean-tech components for hydrogen production/consumption, renewable energy and energy storage

One key requirement is that the investment must be located in Europe or EEA countries (i.e. Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein).
